Another major media company now officially has some skin in the legal US sports betting game.

The Yahoo Sportsbook app and desktop platforms went live in New Jersey on Thursday, November 14, launching just less than three weeks after the partnership between Yahoo Sports and BetMGM was first announced.

  • LIFE'S MORE FUN WITH SKIN IN THE GAME. Download DraftKings Sportsbook for the best gaming experience. Available on iOS and Android. You must download the app in order to play DraftKings.
  • Other ways to watch. Live games are available on the Yahoo Sports app on your phone and tablet. For more ways to watch, visit our. Games are available in the US only. Screencasting is not permitted.
  • Sportsbook app is actually called “BetMGM NJ Sports,” so it can be hard to find if you don’t know what you’re looking for. But, the app itself is very well-designed and is just as easy.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the latest NJ sports betting offering—a rollout in other states come at a later date—is that the Yahoo Sportsbook is not a standalone app like Fox Bet, which was the first sportsbook launched by a major sports media company in the United States.

Instead, Verizon—who owns the Yahoo brand—choose to integrate MGM’s sports betting platform directly into the existing Yahoo Sports app for Apple iOS and Android.

Verizon’s bet on integration may prove to be a winning one since over 60 million people visit the Yahoo Sports website and app every month.

Even though Yahoo Sportsbook’s services are currently limited to New Jersey residents who are 21 and older, its massive user base could prove to be a strong foundation when the BetMGM platform goes live in more states.

A total of 19 states have legalized sports betting, with 13 including online and mobile in their new laws. Colorado became the latest state after the Proposition DD ballot measure received majority approval from voters earlier this month.

Details of the multiyear agreement between Verizon and MGM have not been disclosed, but the press release said BetMGM would “power sports betting for Yahoo Sports and create collaborative content experiences and live events.”

“The historic partnership with Yahoo Sports and BetMGM will change the future of fandom, providing new ways for sports fans to go beyond engaging with content and interact through commerce,” Verizon Media CEO Guru Gowrappan said in a press release. “At Verizon Media we believe in building products that connect consumers to their passions and drive the deepest end-to-end value possible.”

“This partnership marks an important moment for BetMGM in the growing U.S. sports betting sector,” said Jim Murren, Chairman and CEO of MGM Resorts International. “Integrating Yahoo’s leading fantasy sports operations and content with BetMGM’s world-class sports betting and interactive platform uniquely positions us to drive market share and large-scale adoption among sports fans.”

This isn’t the first time Yahoo has dived into the sports wagering market. Yahoo Sports offered free and paid daily fantasy sports soon after the DraftKings and FanDuel advertising blitz in the mid-2010s.

It’s hard to ignore how fast the corporate sports media companies are becoming conglomerates, who wish to combine “sports” and “sports betting” until they are essentially one and the same—forever blurring the lines between the two for better or for worse.

The Verizon-MGM partnership is only the latest entry to the “Sports Betting War,” and you can bet that they’ll be far from the last.

It seems everybody wants a piece of the NJ sports betting pie. Even Yahoo. Yes, that Yahoo.

The Yahoo sportsbook app powered by BetMGM is expected to roll out in New Jersey today. To access, users need to download the Yahoo Sports app on iOS and Android devices or via the web at sports.yahoo.com.

But unlike the other 17 sports betting apps out there in NJ, this one is not exactly taking the betting action.

Instead, it’s integrated with the BetMGM sportsbook app.

More about Yahoo Sportsbook and how it works

Fans nationwide will be able to view betting odds for popular sports such as football, basketball, baseball and hockey via Yahoo Sports. However, those located in NJ are now able to place wagers via BetMGM.

So the land-based partnership rule does not apply. BetMGM operates via the Borgata license, and Yahoo won’t need one.

Here is a brief description from the press release:

“Yahoo Sportsbook powered by BetMGM elevates the experience for sports fans, getting them closer to the games they’re passionate about and closing the loop from content to transactions.”

BetMGM gets creative with Yahoo deal

The Yahoo sportsbook announcement is not exactly one of those surprise announcements.

News of Yahoo teaming up with MGMfor sports betting came about in late October. The story did not include a launch date for the app, but referenced that it “will take place next month.”

So here we are in the second week of November. And NJ is the first state to get this partnership going.

The attraction for MGM is the pure numbers that Yahoo generates on a regular basis. We are talking millions of active visitors to Yahoo Sports alone.

Granted, they are not all in the Garden State, but it’s still a very impressive number.

Yahoo + BetMGM = sports betting

Is this a one-of-a-kind setup? Not really.

A similar example is the connection between TheScore and TheScore Bet. The latter joined the market in September under the Monmouth Park license.

Like Yahoo Sports, the Score is a sports news app with 4-5 millionmonthly active users.

So if a bettor reads news regarding LeBron James or Joel Embiid on theScore, and suddenly is intrigued to wager, it’s one click away. This is where theScore Bet comes into play. And the same goes for Yahoo Sports fans who want to place a bet.

Of course, New Jersey will just be the first of many states where this Yahoo/BetMGM collaboration will exist. Future rollouts of this integrated sports and sportsbook app are in the works.
